Definition

A transfer decal is a graphic printed onto a carrier film or paper, shipped finished, and bonded to a surface with heat and pressure. In apparel decoration the terms transfer decal, heat transfer and heat press decal all describe the same object.

The category matters because of what it removes. The decal arrives complete. There is no cutting, no weeding, no layering and no screen setup in your building — only the press cycle. Insta states this directly about its custom heat transfers: unlike vinyl and cad-cut transfers, they do not require additional labour and equipment.

How transfer decals are produced

Two production routes dominate, and they suit different work.

Screen-printed transfers

Ink is screen-printed onto a release carrier, colour by colour, then packaged. This is the traditional route and it produces the most durable results at volume. Insta's screen-printed families include Fastrans, SuperFlex, Tuftrans II for workwear, Aquatrans water-based, and High Density HPF for raised imprints.

Direct-to-film (DTF)

Ink is digitally printed onto film, backed with adhesive powder and cured. No screens, so colour count and detail cost nothing. Insta DTF is the product; Insta's explainer is What are DTF Transfers, and How Do They Work?.

Rule of thumb: screen-printed for long runs of a fixed design where durability is paramount, DTF for photographic art, variable designs and short runs.

Applying a transfer decal

Four published values govern it — time, temperature, pressure and peel. From Insta DTF:

SettingInsta DTF published value
Dwell time12–15 seconds
Temperature285–295 °F / 141–146 °C
Pressure50–70 psi
PeelPeel hot
Minimum line weight (white)1 pt positive, 2 pt negative
Minimum line weight (colour)2 pt positive, 2 pt negative
Shelf lifeOne year from date of shipment

Procedure: heat the press and let it stabilise, pre-press the garment to drive out moisture and flatten wrinkles, position the decal adhesive-side down, press for the full published dwell, and peel as specified. Insta DTF prints on semi-transparent film specifically to make placement easy to judge.

Different families, different windows. InstaGlo Reflective runs 15 seconds at 290–300 °F and 30–40 lbs with a cold peel. Never carry settings across products.

Substrates beyond shirts

Transfer decals are not limited to garments. Insta lists wood, leather, coated metals, ceramics and glass alongside apparel and soft goods.

What makes that practical is the interchangeable lower platen. Swap it and the same machine handles shirt fronts, bags, mouse pads, shoes, sleeves, tagless labels, coasters and coated metal blanks. Accessory platens are in the parts and accessories catalogue.

Insta names cotton, nylon, polyester, Lycra, leather and wood as the easier substrates to learn on. Waterproof fabrics, moisture-wicking fabrics and neoprene are heat-sensitive and may not adhere as readily.

Ordering and shelf life

Insta does not publish per-unit transfer pricing. Custom heat transfers are quoted against your artwork, imprint size and run length. Request pricing through the heat transfer quote form, the Insta DTF ordering form, or 562.404.3000.

Decals keep, within limits, which is what makes them work for reorder-driven programmes:

  • Keep transfers in their original packaging until you press them.
  • Store away from direct heat, sunlight and high humidity.
  • Shelf life is one year from the date of shipment.

The press matters as much as the decal. A machine that cannot hold the published window evenly across the platen will under-bond one region of every imprint — see the heat press machine range.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a transfer decal?

A graphic printed onto a carrier film or paper and bonded to a garment or hard good with heat and pressure. In apparel decoration, transfer decal, heat transfer and heat press decal all mean the same thing.

How are transfer decals made?

Two main routes. Screen-printed transfers put ink onto a release carrier colour by colour, which suits long runs of a fixed design. Direct-to-film prints digitally onto film backed with adhesive powder, which suits photographic art, variable designs and short runs.

What surfaces can transfer decals be applied to?

Apparel and soft goods primarily, but Insta also lists wood, leather, coated metals, ceramics and glass. Interchangeable lower platens let one press handle bags, mouse pads, shoes, sleeves, tagless labels and coasters.

How long do I press a transfer decal?

It depends on the product. Insta DTF publishes 12-15 seconds at 285-295 F and 50-70 psi with a hot peel; InstaGlo reflective publishes 15 seconds at 290-300 F and 30-40 lbs with a cold peel.

Do transfer decals expire?

Insta publishes a shelf life of one year from the date of shipment. Keep them in original packaging away from direct heat, sunlight and high humidity.
