Insta Graphic Systems at a glance
- US-based heat press manufacturer and custom heat transfer supplier, in business since 1959.
- Machines are sold through a distributor network in over 125 countries, with a European warehouse for overseas orders.
- All Insta presses carry UL, ETL, CuL and CE approvals and are RoHS/WEEE compliant.
- Warranty: lifetime on the upper heating element, one year on parts, 90 days on labor.
- Insta states an average useful machine life of 25+ years and has won SGIA Product of the Year awards.
- Custom heat transfers are quote-only - pricing depends on artwork, size and run length.
The term covers two different machines
“Sublimation machine” gets used for two pieces of equipment that do different jobs.
The sublimation printer prints your design in sublimation ink onto transfer paper. The sublimation heat press then converts that ink to gas under heat and pressure so it ingrains into the substrate. You need both to produce anything, and they are separate purchases with separate specifications.
This article is about the press half, which is the half that determines quality. Insta manufactures sublimation heat presses; it is not a printer manufacturer.
What sublimation does to a substrate
Insta's description: sublimation printing with heat transfers uses a special type of ink that actually ingrains itself into the fabric, unlike regular heat transfers, giving the images and graphics an even longer lifespan.
Three consequences follow directly from that:
- No hand feel. There is no layer sitting on the fabric, so nothing to crack, peel or stiffen.
- Polyester only. The bond is chemical and needs polyester or a polymer coating. Cotton will not hold it.
- No white ink. Sublimation cannot lay down white, so light substrates are the working range.
Insta positions its sublimation machines as opening the ability to print higher-quality images, graphics and labels on polyester garments.
What the press must deliver
Insta states the requirement plainly: sublimation heat press machines have the ability to reach the temperature and pressure levels needed for sublimation, and they give the even pressure and temperature the process needs.
Evenness is not a nice-to-have in sublimation. Because the dye enters the fibre, an uneven platen prints a visible colour gradient across the piece — and unlike a surface transfer, there is nothing to re-press or repair. The garment is finished, and finished wrong.
Insta's stated machine engineering — superior pressure and temperature distribution across the entire platen, plus significantly faster heat recovery than other machines — is what that requirement translates into on the spec sheet.
The machines
| Model | Type | Platen size | Published price |
|---|---|---|---|
| Insta 828 (240V) | Sublimation / Automatic | 20" x 25" | $6,795.00 |
| Insta 780 Dual Shuttle | Specialty | 16" x 20" (40cm x 50cm) | $10,795.00 |
The Insta 828 is a 240V machine with Insta's largest automatic platen at 20" x 25", described as its largest automatic machine and cited for even temperature and pressure — both essential in sublimation. The Insta 780 Dual Shuttle runs 16" x 20" (40cm x 50cm) at 30–110 PSI working pressure, weighs 375 lbs, and switches between manual, semi-automatic and fully automatic modes. The INSTAKART rolling cart ($499.00) is also listed in the category.
Size the platen to your largest intended print. All-over polyester work is the most common reason to buy into sublimation, and it is the application most likely to exceed a small platen.
Is sublimation the right process at all?
Answer three questions before buying anything.
- Is the garment polyester or polymer-coated? If it is cotton, sublimation is out. Insta DTF covers cotton, cotton-poly blends, low-bleed polyester and canvas.
- Is the substrate light? No white ink means no dark-garment work.
- Is volume high enough to justify two machines? Buying finished custom heat transfers needs only a press.

Insta publishes a lifetime warranty on the upper heating element, one year on parts and 90 days on labour, and states an average useful machine life of 25 or more years. Every Insta machine carries UL, ETL, CuL and CE approval and is RoHS/WEEE compliant.
