What they are

A reflective heat transfer label is a heat-applied mark carrying retroreflective material, so the imprint returns light towards its source. Applied with a heat press rather than sewn, it can take any shape your artwork does — a company logo, a name block, a role identifier — instead of the fixed geometry of reflective tape.

Insta's product is InstaGlo, positioned for occupational workwear, consumer activewear, gym bags, hats, wristbands, headbands and other performance fabrics. Its stated purpose is adding both decorative and functional elements at once.

The reflectivity figure to quote to a specifier is 380 candela power. Published product features are: enhances safety, 380 candela power, great washability, holds great detail, stretchable, available in silver.

Washability matters more for labels than for decorative prints. A uniform garment gets laundered on a schedule, often industrially, and a reflective mark that degrades over a season stops being a safety feature.

Fabrics and technique

Rated apparel:

  • Cotton and cotton blends
  • Polyester and polyester blends
  • Dri-Fit and moisture-wicking
  • Spandex and Lycra

Technique: pre-heat the material and use a Teflon or parchment window for the press application if needed. Press at 290–300 °F and 30–40 lbs for 15 seconds, then let it go fully cold before peeling. InstaGlo is a cold-peel product; peeling warm lifts the reflective layer.

The pressing window is short and specific, which is exactly the case where an uneven platen shows up as patchy brightness under a headlight rather than as an obvious defect on the bench.

Artwork rules for label work

InstaGlo requires a minimum line weight of 2.5 pt positive and 2.5 pt negative. Label artwork is where this bites hardest, because labels tend to carry small type, thin rules and dense information.

Practical checklist before submitting:

  • Set type heavy enough that no stroke falls below 2.5 pt at final imprint size.
  • Remove hairline boxes and dividing rules or thicken them.
  • Open up knockout counters — the negative space has the same 2.5 pt requirement.
  • Confirm the final imprint dimensions before checking line weights; scaling down breaks compliance.

Pressing labels at volume

Label application is repetitive, small-format and placement-critical, which is its own machine category. Insta's specialty heat presses cover it: the single-station label press was designed for the label industry and can be foot-pedal operated, which Insta notes gives the user additional hand dexterity and consistency with graphic and label positioning.

The Insta 907 ($5,295.00) runs 6" x 6" standard (15.2 x 15.2 cm) standard platens — dual lower platens with a single upper that swings between them for efficiency. The Insta 421 Flat Press ($1,195.00, 6" x 6") is the manual option aimed at labelling and branding applications, with a touchscreen and five presets.

InstaGlo is a custom item. Insta does not publish per-unit transfer pricing. Custom heat transfers are quoted against your artwork, imprint size and run length. Order on 562.404.3000 or sales@instagraph.com.

  • Keep transfers in their original packaging until you press them.
  • Store away from direct heat, sunlight and high humidity.
  • Shelf life is one year from the date of shipment.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are reflective heat transfer labels?

Heat-applied labels carrying retroreflective material, so the imprint returns light towards its source. Unlike sewn reflective tape they take the shape of your artwork, which allows a logo or name block rather than a plain stripe.

How reflective are InstaGlo labels?

Insta publishes 380 candela power. The product is available in silver, with published features covering enhanced safety, washability, detail retention and stretchability.

How are reflective labels applied?

Pre-heat the material, use a Teflon or parchment window if needed, then press at 290-300 F with 30-40 lbs of pressure for 15 seconds and allow the piece to cool fully before peeling. InstaGlo is a cold-peel product.

What artwork requirements apply to reflective labels?

A minimum line weight of 2.5 pt positive and 2.5 pt negative. Small type, hairline rules and tight knockout detail usually need reworking, and line weights must be checked at final imprint size.

What press is best for label work?

A single-station label press, which Insta notes can be foot-pedal operated for hand dexterity and consistent positioning. The Insta 907 uses dual lower platens with a swinging upper, and the manual Insta 421 Flat Press is aimed at labelling and branding.
